Our Story

Origins of our program:

The Atlantic County Hope One/Hope Exists Mobile Outreach Program was founded by Eric Scheffler, the former sheriff of Atlantic County. Recognizing the need for enhanced support services within the sheriff's office, Sheriff Scheffler established the foundation to create safer and healthier communities. Inspired by the Morris County Hope One Outreach Unit, Sheriff Scheffler identified a critical need for direct services for individuals suffering from mental health and substance use disorders. He expanded on their model, creating a unique mobile social service program tailored to the needs of Atlantic County.

Sheriff Scheffler's vision was driven by the belief that the growing epidemic of mental health and substance use disorders was robbing individuals of their potential, families of their identity, and the community of its healthy growth. He believed in the power of an independent program that could offer free resources to any community member seeking treatment services. This vision became a reality through daily outreach efforts, making essential services accessible to everyone in the Atlantic County area.

 How We Make a Difference:

Veterans Services:  We offer support through the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program (SSG Fox SPGP), a community-based outreach and suicide prevention program designed to reduce suicide risk and improve the well-being of eligible Veterans and their families.

Food Distributions:  We conduct three monthly food distributions in Mizpah, Hammonton, and Pleasantville, serving approximately 250 individuals at each location. These efforts help meet the nutritional needs of underserved communities in Atlantic County.

Mobile Recovery OutreachOur dedicated team conducts weekly mobile outreaches, providing direct linkage to recovery-related services, including both short-term and long-term treatment options.

Community Partnerships: We collaborate with local organizations and stakeholders to maximize our impact and provide comprehensive support.

Client-Centered Approach: We prioritize the needs of our clients, ensuring they receive timely and effective assistance.
